Why 12mm is the boba bore

Full-size tapioca pearls run about 8mm to 10mm once cooked and swollen. They will not pass through anything narrower than a 12mm bore, which is why a standard catering straw fails immediately on a boba serve.

• 12mm — the correct boba bore. Full-size tapioca, taro balls, jelly.
• 10mm — works for smaller pearls and popping boba, but not full-size tapioca.

Length matters too. Bubble tea is usually served in a 700ml (24oz) cup, so a 240mm to 260mm straw sits at the right height. A 200mm straw disappears into the cup.

Paper or plastic?

Paper boba straws are unrestricted, so any venue can buy them. Plastic boba straws are supplied to exempt businesses only, with an eligibility declaration at checkout.
